How it works

Around the world there are 15 different plug and socket types (labelled A to O) and two main electrical systems — roughly 100–127 V (much of the Americas and Japan) and 220–240 V (most of Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania), at either 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

  • Plug adapter — changes the shape of your plug so it fits the wall socket. It does not change the voltage.
  • Voltage converter — changes the voltage so a device built for one system can run safely on another.
  • Dual-voltage devices — anything labelled INPUT: 100–240V (most phone and laptop chargers) only ever needs a plug adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a travel plug adapter?

It depends on your destination. If the sockets there have a different shape from your plugs, you need a plug adapter. Pick your home country and destination in the checker above to find out instantly.

What is the difference between a plug adapter and a voltage converter?

A plug adapter only changes the shape of your plug so it fits the wall socket — it does not change the electricity. A voltage converter changes the voltage itself, which you need when your device is not rated for the local voltage.

How many plug types are there in the world?

There are 15 plug types in use worldwide, labelled A to O. You can browse every type and see which countries use it on our plug types pages.

How do I know if my device works abroad?

Check the label on the device or its charger. If it reads INPUT: 100–240V, 50/60Hz it works everywhere and only needs a plug adapter. If it lists a single voltage like 120V, you may need a voltage converter in 230V countries.
